The standard of quality is actually somewhat lower here than it has been in my galleries of local things - because I know I won't be back anytime soon, I've accepted some pictures which, were the subject matter closer to home, I would have rejected in favor of another try later.
All the pictures in this gallery were taken betwen September 16 and
September 21 of 2004.
Location: Bucksport, MEI drove by it on the way and it was shiny! What can I say? I like
the aesthetic of artifically lit things at night.
Location: Yarmouth, NSYarmouth had a small but very nice garden. This was identified by
a helpful friend as Monkshood!
Location: Yarmouth, NSThis was taken in the same place. I used my digital camera here, because the large depth-of-field that the small sensor gives is very convenient for macro pictures like this. I can take handheld macro pictures on the digital camera which would require me to use a tripod with one of my 35mm cameras. This is especially convenient when the tripod is back in the car.
Identified by the same helpful friend as Musk Mallow!
Location: Nova ScotiaThis picture was taken on the grounds of a lighthouse outside of
Yarmouth. The lighthouse itself needed a coat of paint and wasn't
terribly picturesque, but the waves on the rocks and the garden on the
grounds were very nice.
Location: Shelburne, NSOn the morning I left Shelburne, it was quite foggy, and I took these pictures of one of the anchors they had on display on their waterfront. One was taken on my digital camera, and one on my film camera - can you tell which was which?
If you look carefully, you can actually see a second boat,
mostly obscured by the fog, hiding away behind the more obvious one.
Location: Shelburne, NSThis was a closeup of the same anchor you saw in the previous
picture. Most of the trip was foggy and rainy, supposedly due to the
outskirts of Hurricane Ivan passing through, and it led to some
wondeful pictures with mist and dew.
Location: Kejimkujik Park Seaside AnnexYup, mist and dew.... Do you think I should have cropped the
picture more, taking just the top-right corner? I couldn't decide.
Location: Kejimkujik Park Seaside AnnexThis is one of the pictures which might not have made it in if I could trivially go back - I'd really like another version of this picture, but with the aperture set a bit smaller for greater depth of field such that entirety of the first flower is in focus. However, since I'm obviously not driving all the way back there for this one picture, I decided to include the version I had.
While I'm wishing, I'd also like a photo lab which won't leave
evaporation drops on my negatives like they did with the top right of
this one.
Location: Kejimkujik Park Seaside AnnexIronically, I had a version of this picture with
greater DOF, and I liked it less.
Location: Kejimkujik Park Seaside AnnexThis picture went exactly the way it was supposed to. Yes, it took several minutes to set up the tripod and fuss with the camera to take it, but it turned out well. I had a couple of different versions with different aperture settings - really a must when taking macro pictures like this - and I picked the one I liked best - the on you see here.
The same helpful friend has identifed this as a heal-all
(prunella vulgaris).
Location: Ovens ParkThe sun came out for about 15 minutes altogether on this day, and
this picture was taken during that period. This is actually a digital
camera picture - I also took pictures with my real camera, and the
quality of the picture was better, but it was pointed further to the
right and excluded most of the beach. I selected this one instead
because of the more balanced composition.
Location: Ovens ParkThis spider web glinting in ths sun looked absolutely amazing in
person, and this picture has unfortunately not captured the effect to
the extent that I would have liked. I waffled awhile about included
it at all, but the cyan and magenta interference colors in the bottom
part of the spider web finally persuaded me to put it in.
Location: Halifax, NSI'd have preferred a picture of this boat with sails up, out on the
water, but her crew was nowhere to be found, and it didn't look like
she was going to be sailing anywhere that day.
Location: Peggy's Cove, NSThis is about as high as the waves got while I was there.
Generally the sea was quite calm the entire time.
Location: Nova ScotiaI took this picture because of the lone truck parked over by the
Bay of Fundy, which was at low tide at the time. I put the driftwood
in to balance the truck.
Location: Parrsboro, NSThis picture was taken standing down in the Bay of Fundy, in a
location that would be underwater at high tide. I couldn't resist the
temptation to take a picture of a lighthouse without any water, and I
think it really is an attractive picture of the bay.
Location: Fundy National ParkBadger! Badger! Badger! Badger! Badger! Badger! Badger! Badger!
Location: Fundy National ParkThis snail, also in the Bay of Fundy, was about chest-height on the
boulder, and would be underwater at high tide.
Location: Fundy National ParkA fair number of trees in Fundy National Park seemed to be dying from what looked like Spanish Moss, but apparently isn't because Spanish Moss doesn't grow that far north.
Although I'm generally unhappy about the trees dying, I must say
this picture has an amazing contrast between the color of the
remaining leaves and the black and white dead branches in the
background.
Location: Fundy National ParkIsn't the green in this picture a wonderful rich color? This was a
picture of a beach in Fundy National Park at low tide. I wanted to
get down to the beach, but there didn't seem to be any trails going
down, and I didn't have any rope or climbing equipment.
Location: Fundy National ParkI like this one because the lighting was just right.
Location: Kejimkujik Seaside AnnexThis one came from a different roll of film (Fuji Velvia) and is a
late addition. I'm told that when I first looked at this picture, I
was so happy it sounded like I was in the middle of having sex.
Sadly, it's not really possible to have sex with a picture (unless
paper cuts are your kink), so you'll have to settle for looking at it.
(Why aren't there more 1280x1024 sizes? 1280x1024 is a nonstandard
size, with a different aspect ratio than everything else. Cropping
pictures to make this size is a bother, so I don't do it automatically
- I do it only when somebody specifically asks me for it. Thus, if
you want it, you have to ask. Other sizes are also available on
request.)
