Terran Melconian: Self Portraits

You know, nature photography is a lot like sex. First you park the car. Your equipment is long and heavy, and it's much less fun to use if you don't have some help. You go into the woods and get all hot and sweaty. The most important part lasts only a fraction of a second, but for the best results you need good timing. Then, when it's all over, you don't really know what you've caught until you get the results back from the lab.

I can't remember whose idea this was, but the picture was taken by Courtney. The concept is great, but I think it would benefit from a less busy background, and I also need to wear a bathrobe which isn't white.

Date: October 2002

This one I took myself, with the camera on a tripod and with the self-timer. This picture was one of a series, all posed fairly similarly, which taught me something important. Specifically, it taught me that I need to put on clean pants when I'm going to get my picture taken.

As I think I've mentioned, I don't use actual black and white film; I just modify the images after they've been scanned. This picture is actually the red component, not the value component. Why? Because I looked at several possibilities and liked this one the best, that's why.

This picture was taken by carolyn jones on my digital camera. The use of the digital camera was unfortunate, since it resulted in the overexposure of the red channel where the sun hit my face; I wish I'd had something else with me at the time. Nonetheless, it's only a little bit overexposed (some of the others in the series were much worse), and I think it still turned out reasonably well.

I took this picture myself, with the camera on a tripod and a timer. It's possible to get perfectly good results this way, but the process is extremely time consuming, because it takes so long to see what one has and then adjust accordingly.

The pants I'm wearing in this picture are, unsurprisingly, custom made.

Date: January 2005

This picture was originally taken for marketing purposes for carolyn, who made me the outfit. It will probably eventually be used for those purposes, but I imagine it will have a different background in that incarnation.

For now, I just couldn't resist repurposing it like this.

Discussion heard about this picture: "He looks like a stoner!" "No, I think he looks like the host of a bad sex show!"

Date: May 2006

I decided to include this one to counterbalance the previous one. The moire banding effect on the right shoulder is more interesting than the picture itself. Yay digital.

Date: December 2009

Originally taken as an exercise in studio lighting, I thought this picture turned out well enough to include. It is the only picture of myself without glasses that I have.

Date: December 2009

A sort of companion to the previous. I find that I like myself much better in hard light than soft.

You can see a bit of hard glare from my glasses on the side which is in shadow. I had trouble making up my mind about whether to leave that in or edit it out, but ultimately decided to leave it.

I also played with a heavily modified version of this image, but ultimately didn't like it.
