These Joshua trees had suffered from a fire, but were still alive
and apparently recovering.
I think this picture is perhaps the least interesting of the lot, but
I could not find a better one which gave any sort of sense of the
overall landscape with the desert floor and the mountains.
Isn't the cholla so cute and furry? Don't you want to go give it a
BIG HUG?
When I took this picture, I was a lad of 10 in hexavigesimal.
There's fine fur on the plant stems which is catching the light.
This picture is of the badlands below Font's Point in Borrego at
sunset.
I like this black and white presentation very much, although I have received some feedback that the left side is too bright. It was made in a physically irreproducible way, by subtracting part of the blue channel from the red channel in order to darken the sky.
This picture was taken the following morning at sunrise, from the same
location (originally the text here stated that it was taken at sunset,
but I rechecked my notes and that was mistaken).
I wish I could have taken it slightly later, with the sun on more of the peaks. Unfortunately, this was not possible, as after this picture was taken, the sun went behind a layer of clouds and did not reappear for the rest of the day.
There's nothing about this pinecone picture which is really evocative
of the desert landscape, but I did take it there.
This one was taken near the top of Whale Peak, a local mountain. To
get to the trailhead, we had to take a four-wheel-drive vehicle over
extremely rutted roads, and getting to the peak required the use of a
compass and a topographic map ordered in advance.
When I took this picture, I felt great. Twenty minutes later, I got incredibly sick and started throwing up every hour for the next day and a half.
Due to being extremely unwell, I was awake around dawn, when these
clouds (fairly rare in the desert) were blowing over. The trash
barrels add that extra touch of class.
